Cambridge Civil War Days - October 5 & 6, 2013
Planning for the 3rd annual Cambridge Civil War Days has begun!
We have been selected by the Vermont Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission as a Top 10 Event for 2013. - Mark your calendars!
We will once again be joined by the Vermont Civil War Hemlocks with their two full-scale 3-inch ordnance cannons and by the Champlain Valley Historical Reenactors who provide a great variety of Civil War reenactors from the Medical Coalition to Union and Confederate Infantry to the camp's Sutler (a moving general store)... and that is to name just a few.
2012 Cambridge Civil War Days

Educational and entertaining for the whole family!
The event will occur in historic Cambridge Village on VT Route 15, the Grand Army of the Republic Highway named for the veterans’ organization formed after the war. The village of Cambridge will step back 150 years to be transformed into a bustling community of Civil War-era activities with both military and civilian reenactors. Selected by the governor’s Sesquicentennial Commission as one of the top ten Civil War events for 2012, this wide range of displays, speakers, and other activities concludes each day with a demonstration of battle tactics used in the conflict. Visitors of all ages will be entertained and educated at this free event, held annually by the Cambridge Historical Society during the commemoration of the 1861-1865 War of the Rebellion.

Local author Bill McKone describes the 1866 and 1870 invasions of Canada from Vermont by Irish veterans of the Civil War. The Fenian Brotherhood, militant nationalists seeking to free their homeland from British rule, left their mark in Cambridge village - a carved brick in the 1826 building next to the monument.

Dressed in period costume, Vermont singer Linda Radtke shares songs popular in Vermont during the Civil War as well as letters from Vermonters from the era. From sentimental songs about the girl back home to satirical ballads, Ms. Radtke traces the evolution of tone in Vermont popular song, from patriotic to elegiac as the war continued. The Vermont Civil War Songbook features the sheet music collection from the Vermont Historical Society.

Come view Civil War slides with songs of the era as the story of the 2nd Vermont Brigade unfolds with Dick Simpson, in period costume portraying his great grandfather Aaron Wiley, tells his story with the brigade that ended up on the road to Gettysburg.

O'hAnleigh performs the music of Irish America, drawing on the immigrant experience, the culture of the Irish in America, and the legends and stories of Ireland. During the American civil war, Irish immigrants on both sides of the conflict brought their music with them, re-writing the lyrics to reflect their experiences, fears, hopes, and aspirations of a better life when the war ended. O'hAnleigh performs many of these songs to recreate life in the camps of both sides.

Author Rob Grandchamp discusses Capt. Orville Bixby, Co. E, 2nd Vermont who was killed on the second day of the Wilderness. His son, Orville, was the founder of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) in Vermont.
