CHS Monthly Programs and Past Events

The Cambridge Historical Society hosts a historical program and/or meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Warner Lodge building, 49 School Street in Jeffersonville, VT.  Our programs, meetings and events are free and open to the public.  All are welcome!

Join us on Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00pm at the Cambridge Historical Society for a nostalgic look at one of our town’s most beloved traditions—the Cambridge Fun Run, which brought runners, walkers, and families together from 1981 to 2013.

Vermont on the Silver Screen

When: Wednesday, July 9, 2025, 7 to 8 PM
Where: The Cambridge Historical Society, Warner Lodge, 49 School St, Jeffersonville, VT

Vermont has been a featured location in Hollywood movies for nearly a century. It has represented many different ideals during that time, and its portrayal reflects both Vermont’s own history as well as American history. Examining those films provides interesting and fun insights into the hold Vermont has had on imagination in the media age.Amanda Kay Gustin of the Vermont Historical Society will provide background and share clips ranging chronologically from 1919’s Way Down East to 2005’s Thank You for Smoking.

The American Revolution – 1775 From Soldiers to Settlers: Connecting Cambridge to the Revolution

Join the Cambridge Historical Society as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with a special event exploring the lives of Cambridge’s earliest settlers—Revolutionary War soldiers from Bennington.

Discover how these men bore witness to some of the most pivotal moments in the founding of Vermont and the United States. Researcher Jen Bartlau will guide us through the process of uncovering their stories using genealogy research, pension records, military files, and historical accounts.

Learn where you can experience history firsthand and walk in the footsteps of these soldiers in 1775.

We look forward to connecting Cambridge to its Revolutionary roots!

The program is free and all are welcome.
The building is handicapped accessible

Special Memorial Day Event Honoring the Grand Army of the Republic Highway!

When: Sunday, May 18, 2025,10 AM – 5 PM 
Where: Cambridge Village, VT


Step back in time and commemorate the legacy of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the organization formed by Union veterans after the Civil War. This year’s Memorial Day event pays tribute to their dedication and the significance of Vermont’s GAR Highway (VT Route 15).

Event Highlights:
Civil War Exhibits & Demonstrations – Open from 10 AM at Boyden Events Barn.
Historical Marker Dedication – At 3 PM in Cambridge village center. Witness the unveiling of a new roadside marker honoring the GAR Highway, presented by the great-grandson of the first commander of GAR Post 10. 
Grand Army of the Republic Highway Day – Officially proclaimed by the Vermont legislature. Join us for a day of reflection, history, and appreciation as we honor the service and sacrifice of those who fought to preserve the Union.

Cambridge Village National Historic Registry Application

Cambridge Village has begun the process of seeking nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Preservation Committee will explain why, how, and when.
Cambridge High School Sports History by Spencer Noble

The rich history of sports at Cambridge High School from 1920 through 1967. Presented by Spencer Noble.
Spending summers in the 1940's and '50s at a Vermont hill farm.
An oral history with Gert Gonyo, who spent her summers in the 1940's and '50's as a young girl with her aunt and uncle, Gertrude and Robert Burns. They operated a family farm at the top of Cady Hill Road in Cambridge, Vermont. Gert talks about her experiences there and what it was like living at the self sufficient farm, which had minimal modern amenities.

The history and events behind designating VT Route 15 as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.

The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman
According to the medieval Icelandic sagas, a Viking woman came to the New World 500 years before Columbus. Gudrid the Far-Traveler, sister-in-law of the explorer Leif Eiriksson, tried to set up a colony on the shores of the Gulf of St Lawrence around the year 1000.

While this story was long thought to be a myth, author Nancy Marie Brown tells how more and more of Gudrid's story is being proved true by recent archaeological digs in Newfoundland, Greenland, and Iceland


Growing up in Cambridge Jct. in the 1940s and 50s.
Donna Burnor Nolan grew up in Cambridge Junction Vermont in the 1940s and 50s. Her family was greatly impacted by the death of her father, one of three railroad workers, killed in a tragic train accident, near the Junction, in October, 1949. Her interesting story of growing up in the mid-20th century is part of the Cambridge Historical Society's oral history project.

A Peek at Puritan Gravestone Symbology
Ever wondered what a grimacing or grinning skull means on old 17th & 18th century gravestones? Why do they have wings? Are those geometric shapes just decoration? Jen Bartlau discusses all this and more.
